McLennan County Small Grain Tour

The McLennan County Small Grain Tour is set for 8 a.m. April 24 beginning at 2662 Plainview Road in McGregor.

The tour is hosted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service offices in McLennan, Limestone, Hamilton, Falls, Coryell, Bosque and Bell counties. Three general continuing education units will be offered.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and cost is $10. The program will conclude after the noon meal.

“We have several presentations that will be of interest to area producers,” said Shane McLellan, AgriLife Extension agent for agriculture in McLennan County. “Producers will get a look at some new herbicide technology and fungicides that are available, plus there will be information on fertility management for the upcoming crop season.”

Topics and presentations include:

– Marketing of Grain, Dr. Mark Welch, AgriLife Extension grain marketing economist, College Station.

– Proper Small Grain Seeding Rate and New Herbicide/Fungicide for Small Grains, Dr. Clark Neely, AgriLife Extension small grains specialist, College Station.

-Update from McLennan County Farm Service Agency, Mike Maedgen, county executive director.

– Integrated Pest Management, discussion of sugarcane aphid and hessian fly research in McLennan County, Dr. Allen Knutson, AgriLife Extension entomologist, Dallas.

– Small Grain Fertility Management, Dr. Tony Provin, AgriLife Extension soil chemist, College Station.

Capital Farm Credit will provide breakfast. Lunch is sponsored by Niemeier Feed and Grain and other McGregor area businesses.
