Future of Farm Policy to Be Discussed
AMARILLO, Texas (November 15, 2017) – The Texas Wheat Symposium will be held Wednesday, Nov. 29, in conjunction with the Amarillo Farm and Ranch Show in the Grand Plaza Room at the Amarillo Civic Center. The free event will begin at 10 a.m.
The symposium, which is hosted by the Texas Wheat Producers Association, will conclude with the annual Ag Appreciation Luncheon, presented by the association and the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce Ag Council.
“This year’s program will focus on the direction of farm policy and market conditions,” said Texas Wheat Executive Vice President Rodney Mosier. “We are honored to host distinguished individuals from many different backgrounds to address issues that are important to our farmers.”
Jim Wiesemeyer will give the keynote address during the Amarillo Chamber Ag Appreciation Luncheon, which begins at noon. Wiesemeyer has reported on the business of agriculture and trade policy since 1972. He most recently served as senior vice president at Informa Economics, Inc., and is the Washington policy analyst for Pro Farmer and Farm Journal. During his address, he will discuss the current and future political landscape in relation to agriculture.
The morning agenda will feature:
- FSA and NRCS Updates: Texas State Executive Director Gary Six and State Conservationist Salvador Salinas
- Farm Policy Outlook Panel: Josh Tonsager, National Association of Wheat Growers; Joe Outlaw, Texas A&M Agricultural and Food Policy Center; and Tom Sell, Combest Sell and Associates
- Commodity Market Outlook: Mark Welch, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Economist
- Texas Agriculture Outlook: Sid Miller, Texas Agriculture Commissioner
“The symposium program will cover the most pressing topics for wheat farmers this year – the farm bill and the market situation,” said TWPA President Ben Scholz. “I think anyone directly or indirectly involved in agriculture can benefit from the program and the top-notch speakers featured this year.”
