Producer investment in international market development through checkoff programs continues to deliver results with an announcement of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) and Bangladesh. Under the agreement, Bangladesh has committed to purchasing 700,000 metric tons (25.7 million bushels) of U.S. wheat annually over the next five years.

“Through this MOU signing, the Bangladesh government reiterates its commitment to deepening and renewing its longstanding friendship with the United States,” said USW President and CEO Mike Spier. “The delegation emphasized the need to strengthen and expand trade relations with the Trump Administration, with a particular focus on reducing the existing trade imbalance between the United States and Bangladesh. The agreement also provides an opportunity to demonstrate on a large scale how U.S. farmers can reliably meet the country’s need for high-quality milling wheat.”

While Bangladesh has historically been a swing buyer of U.S. wheat, with a high of 450,000 MT in 2019/2020 marketing year and a purchase of 150,000 MT in 2023/2024, this MOU signals a desire for greater consistency and a stronger trading partnership. Although price has often driven past purchases, this new agreement highlights Bangladesh’s growing interest in securing a stable, long-term supply of high-quality wheat.

“This agreement highlights the value of long-term investment in market development,” said Texas Wheat Executive Director Steelee Fischbacher. “This new partnership with Bangladesh shows how strong relationships and consistent outreach can open doors for U.S. wheat around the world.”
