HISTORY
Serving Texas Wheat Farmers
for 75 Years
In the late 1940s, Texas wheat farmers began gathering to tackle challenges like drought, government quotas and volatile markets. Those early conversations in the Panhandle grew into the Texas Wheat Producers Association, a farmer-led effort to give producers a unified voice in agricultural policy.
When the Texas Wheat Producers Board was established in 1971, the organization expanded beyond advocacy to support marketing, promotion, research and education. Today, the mission endures: a farmer-driven commitment to strengthen and protect the future of Texas wheat.
75 Years Of Advocacy
Assessment
Checkoff collections DO NOT constitute membership in the Texas Wheat Producers Association, which operates on voluntary private producer membership dues.
Collections are to be made by the “first handler” whether sold, placed in private or government storage, warehouse receipt issued, cleaned for seed, processed or shipped. This includes elevators, gins, pick-up points, shippers, seed companies, mills, feeding facilities or FSA offices, etc.
Grain Assessment
The current assessment rate is three cents per bushel on all wheat sold in Texas. This rate was established by a referendum of Texas wheat producers in 2023 and is compliant with the Texas Commodity Referendum Law.
Small Grain Silage Assessment
In 2025, Texas wheat farmers voted to establish a refundable assessment on small grains silage sold in Texas. The assessment rate will be set by the board annually and limited to 16 cents per ton through 2027 and 24 cents per ton beginning in 2028.
Refunds
While there is no exemption from paying the grain or silage assessments, producers or agribusinesses are allowed to obtain a refund. Applications for a refund must be made within 60 days of the payment date. Refunds will be made within 30 days of the request and receipt of funds from the first handler. To request a refund, mail the refund request, including proof of payment, to the Texas Wheat Producers Board at: 5405 West Interstate 40 Amarillo, TX 79106.
