The Millersview Annual Wheat Tour will be held May 2 at the Millersview Gym at 12199 County Road 6009. The event is being presented by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service offices of McCulloch and Concho counties.
Registration starts at 8 a.m., and the program will run from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. A catfish lunch will be provided by Boondocks. The event is free to attend. Five Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be offered for pesticide applicators, three general, one laws and regulations and one integrated pest management. There will be three continuing education units available for certified crop advisors.
“The wheat tour is one of the largest small grains programs in our area,” said Justin Klinksiek, AgriLife Extension agent, McCulloch County. “It is great to see the growing involvement of wonderful attendees, speakers and sponsors at this annual event. We hope to see it continue to grow and have a quality educational program as well as quality wheat plots.”
Topics and speakers include:
- Small Grain Disease Insect Control – Haley Kennedy, AgriLife Extension agent for integrated pest management, Runnels and Tom Green counties, San Angelo.
- Laws and Regulations for Pesticide Applicators – Jason Jones, Texas Department of Agriculture, Abilene.
- Grain Marketing – Dr. Mark Welch, AgriLife Extension grain marketing specialist, College Station.
- U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farm Service Agency and Natural Resources Conservation Service Updates – Haden Keyser, USDA district conservationist, Brady; and Shawn Reininger, Kleberg-Kenedy Farm Service Agency county director, Kingsville.
- Harvest Weather Outlook – Hector Guerrero, National Weather Service meteorologist, San Angelo.
- No Till/Strip Till Panel – Dr. Reagan Noland, AgriLife Extension agronomist, San Angelo, and Bill Thompson, AgriLife Extension economist, San Angelo.
- When to Plant for Forage or Grain – Dr. Calvin Trostle, AgriLife Extension agronomist, Lubbock.
- Variety Selection and Fertility – Dr. Clark Neely, AgriLife Extension state small grains and oilseed specialist, College Station.
- Wheat/Herbicide Plot Demonstration – Noland and Neely.
