The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host grain grading workshops from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Aug. 28 and Aug. 29 in Canyon for anyone interested in grading corn, wheat and sorghum.
The event will be held at the agriculture pavilion at West Texas A&M University, 600 WTAMU Drive. Cost is $100, and participants should preregister at https://tx.ag/GrainGradingWorkshop. The preregistration deadline is Aug. 27.
Topics include grain grading, proper sampling techniques
Participants will learn the importance of grain grading and grading standards, as well as proper sampling techniques, said DeDe Jones, AgriLife Extension risk management program specialist and coordinator of the workshops, Amarillo.
There also will be a session on identifying different types of damage and their potential impacts on grade and feeding value. Participants will get hands-on experience working with sampling and grading grain.

Morning session topics include:
- Why grade grain — Mark Welch, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension economist and professor in the Texas A&M Department of Agricultural Economics, Bryan-College Station.
- Grain quality and the feedlot industry — Jason Smith, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension beef cattle specialist and associate professor in the Department of Animal Science, Amarillo.
- Current grain standards and upcoming changes — Robert Waller, grain inspector, Federal Grain Inspection Service, League City.
- Hands-on wheat grading workshop — Waller.
Afternoon session topics:
- Hands-on corn grading workshop — Waller.
- Hands-on sorghum grading workshop — Waller.
