As harvest is set to conclude in south Texas next week, reports indicate that combines are gearing up throughout the Blacklands region and across the Rolling Plains. Elevators in Waco, Waxahachie, Fort Worth, Abilene, Wichita Falls and Vernon all began receiving grain last week and most expect harvest in their region to be at full speed within the next five to seven days.
The good news lies in the quality factors. All locations reported high test weights ranging from 60 to 64 pounds per bushel, low moisture with almost all samples coming in below 12 percent and protein ranging from 12 to 13.5 percent. As is common with Texas wheat production, yields were highly variable, even within each growing region, and ranged from 20 to 80 bushels per acre.
