Press Release: Texas Wheat Announces Election and Referendum Results
In a recent statewide election, five wheat farmers were re-elected to the Texas Wheat Producers Board (TWPB) to serve six-year terms. Additionally, farmers voted to establish a statewide small grains silage assessment to fund research and investment in forage-based production systems.
The returning five members will lead the board’s mission to serve farmers through focused investment in research, market development and education. A swearing-in ceremony will take place on May 5, 2025 during the next board meeting.
In District I, Bryan Clift of Stratford will continue representing the counties across the northern Texas Panhandle. Eddie Womack of Tulia was re-elected to serve District II, which covers the southern half of the Panhandle region. Current Board Chairman Chet Creel of Newcastle will continue to represent District III in the Rolling Plains. In District IV, which spans all remaining counties in the state, Tyler Norman of Howe and Ken Davis of Grandview were re-elected.
Wheat and small grain farmers also voted to establish a refundable assessment on small grains silage sold in Texas. The proposal was supported by 98 percent of referendum voters. The assessment rate will be set by the board annually and is limited to $0.16 per ton through 2027, and $0.24 per ton beginning in 2028. Elected representatives will meet May 5 to discuss implementation and priorities for the silage assessment program.
“It is encouraging to see support for the new silage assessment,” said Chet Creel, a farmer from Newcastle and chairman of the Texas Wheat Producers Board. “Farmers sent a clear directive to invest in research that improves small grain silage production systems and provides value back on the farm.”
The Texas Wheat Producers Board is a statewide board funded by a voluntary farmer assessment. Focused programs support research, market development and education to foster and improve outcomes across the Texas wheat industry.
The board first published required legal notices and a news release announcing the election and referendum in January. The voting period ran from March 17 to March 31, 2025. The next board election is scheduled for 2027.
