As wheat harvest winds down in the Rolling Plains and Central Texas, producers in North Texas are still waiting for saturated fields to dry before combines can return to the field. Meanwhile, favorable weather conditions in the Panhandle and Southern High Plains have allowed harvest crews to make steady progress.
Quality reports remain encouraging despite the challenges posed by this year’s conditions. Hard Red Winter wheat samples analyzed to date have shown protein levels ranging from 11% to 14%. While test weights have varied considerably across the state, most samples so far have averaged between 57 and 60 pounds per bushel.
