GATESVILLE — The Texas AgrAbility program and Battleground to Breaking Ground Project will collaborate with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office in Bell County and the Compatible Lands Foundation to host a farm tour and agricultural business workshop May 4-5 in the Fort Hood area.

“The tour and workshop will be for military veterans, individuals with disabilities, beginning farmers and ranchers and anyone else interested in starting an agricultural business,” said Erin Kimbrough, AgriLife Extension family and community health program coordinator, College Station.
Both events are free.
The farm tour will also be a networking event and will be from 4-7 p.m. May 4 at the FEAT Training Farm, 729 W. Farm-to-Market Road 931 in Gatesville.
“The tour and networking will highlight the Farmer Education and Training, or FEAT, center at the farm,” Kimbrough said. “There will be a tour during which attendees will learn about livestock and soil topics.”
She said the tour will focus on useful agricultural skills, including choosing livestock species, determining stocking rates, taking soil and forage samples, reading forage and soil tests, and understanding and using soil maps.
Snacks and drinks will be sponsored by Farm Credit Bank of Texas.

On May 5, the Battleground to Breaking Ground workshop will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the AgriLife Extension office for Bell County, 1605 N. Main St. in Belton.
“This workshop is an agricultural business workshop that’s designed for veterans, but is open to pretty much anyone with an interest in and desire to start an agriculture-related business,” Kimbrough said.
Workshop sessions will address agriculture business startup, business plan development,
farming or ranching with a disability, financial funding sources for farming, ranching and marketing and resources available to support agricultural business operations.
Lunch is included and sponsored by Farm Credit Bank of Texas.
