A Southern Plains NRCS-RCA meeting will be held Thursday, Oct. 16 at Redlands College in El Reno, Oklahoma from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The meeting will focus on adapting agriculture to weather extremes and what natural resource issues need to be addressed in the Southern Plains. The new Climate Hub at the Agricultural Research Service Facility in Fort Reno will also discuss weather adaptation strategies.
The meeting is expected to include a half-day discussion, with expert presentation followed by facilitated group discussion of regional resource problems and potential solutions to these problems. Regional perspectives and solutions will be delivered to USDA leaders and Congress through a national forum to be held in early 2015.
Topics will include three core subjects: water resource management (both water quality and water quantity); soil health; and the resilience of soil and water resources to climate change and extreme weather events. Discussions will effect both crop and livestock producers.
