It was a tough year for wheat in the High Plains. Persistent drought and challenging growing conditions led to the failure of every dryland variety trial due to poor stand establishment, drought-related crop loss or yields too low and variable to provide reliable results.

Thankfully, four irrigated trials reached harvest, generating valuable data that will help advance wheat research and provide growers with the information they need to make informed variety decisions.

Texas Wheat annually invests in the Uniform Variety Trial program to provide unbiased comparisons of wheat varieties and small grain silage across all major growing regions, support county extension outreach efforts, and better understand the key characteristics that influence varietal performance.
